Yes, Visayans should unite and boycott the movie “Sakal, Sakali, Saklolo” for conveying wrong message to our fellow Filipinos. Senator Nene Pimentel has already issued an statement saying that “such conversation smacks of an ethnic slur to non-Tagalog speaking Filipinos as he called on the producer of the film Star Cinema, to promptly take steps to rectify the error.”

Ano ba kayong mga Tanga-Manila, ano ba tingin nyo sa amin? Are we second class citizens?

Pimentel specifically cited a portion of the film in which a grandmother was telling a nanny (yaya) in Tagalog: “Bakit pinapalaki ninyong Bisaya ang apo ko?” (Why are you rearing my grandchild as a Bisaya?)

The mother butted in by telling the yaya: “Speak to the kid in Tagalog. Parang Pinoy. (So that he grows up like a Pinoy).”

He said such conversation smacks of an ethnic slur to non-Tagalog speaking Filipinos as he called on the producer of the film Star Cinema, to promptly take steps to rectify the error.

“It offends the sensibilities of the Visayans and other non-Tagalog speaking citizens by making them feel as if they are less Filipino than the Tagalogs. It creates useless hatred in the nation,” he said.

Pimentel also voiced disappointment that the Movie and Television Review and Classification Board has overlooked the palpable flaw in the film which it should not have tolerated in keeping with its functions.

The hell we care if it’s an entry to the 33rd Metro Manila Film Festival. Because it ‘discriminates’ us, we’d rather watch JackAss. It makes some real real real gooood sense!

Since then, I’m no fan of Filipino movies. With this development, it gives me more reason not teach my kids in the future to watch Filipino movies. Yes, not all movies are like this one but thing is that producers in the mainstream should at least improve their story lines even a little bit. I’d rather watch Indie Pinoy films because for me it makes some real sense than those produced by giant movie companies in the country.

Yeah, I’m beginning to hate Manilenyos, too. I’m a Kapampangan by the way.

The long term counter to this is building our own industries that would compete with that of the Tagalogs. But for now, we can only protest to these so-called “Nationalists” but in reality are mere Tagalog supremacists.

    There is no Philippine Nation.

nagpapatunay lang talaga na mismo within our ranks, may mga racist din kumbaga. lagi na lang mababa ang tingin sa mga bisaya. is it because tagalog is our national language? so that makes them superior? hehehe

I too was incensed upon reading the article. An artist has a responsibility to make efforts to remove discrimination, bias and prejudice in society. It is utterly irresponsible , revolting , and despicable for Jose Javier Reyes to promote the condescending, discriminatory beliefs and attitudes in this country and reap profits by appealing to these bigot instincts.

In hollywood, movies such as “amistad” , ” a time to kill” and many other movies depict the evils of discrimination in an effort to open minds , shed light, and remove such evils from american society.

Here stupid directors like Jose Javier Reyes who have nothing useful left to write about would rather promote the deeply held prejudice and bias and don’t give a damn about offending the sentiments and sensibilities of visayans. Its making money , so in his mind Jose Javier Reyes and ABS CBN is thinking it must have done something right. This has a two-fold purpose, while promoting the condescending attitude, prejudice and bias of tagalogs this will only deepen the festering wounds, scars and grudges that the patient visayans have been hiding and silently bearing all these years against those arrogant tagalogs.
